Before I help a student, I first have them take a Math Diagnostic test. Not to embarrass them, but so that I can see where they are at. Pretending a student is at a certain grade level in Math does them no good when it comes to building real Math confidence. They can be so embarrassed in a classroom around their peers that they won't won't ask questions or reach out. Try telling a middle-grades or high school student not to care about what others think :)
